Yorkshire Water's One Million Green Fingers campaign this week reaches an important milestone as the company's 1000th volunteer takes part in the initiative that aims to create 350 sustainable school gardens across the region by 2010.
In total over 7000 hours have been given up by employees throughout the business since the campaign launched back in 2007. The volunteers not only give up their time to carry out the challenge but also invest time to plan, manage and coordinate what the new garden will look like.
Adrian Roberts, field technician for the company by day and volunteer extraordinaire the rest of the time, is the 1000th person involved in the initiative. However, giving up his spare time is second nature to Adrian who has been a volunteer in some shape or from for the last eight years.
“Volunteering is something that I would encourage everybody to have a go at. Not only does it help to bring teams within a business together but it really does help the local community and to see the smiles on some of the children's faces shows how much difference a few hours can certainly make" said Adrian
Yorkshire Water encourages its employees to take part in volunteering initiatives ranging from One Million Green Fingers to reading and number partners, speaking at events, becoming School Governors and WaterAid fund-raising. The opportunities to get involved are endless.
